Coconut Oil & Weight Loss

Coconut oil, being a highly saturated fat, is the least vulnerable of all the dietary oils to oxidation and free radical formation and therefore is the safest to use in cooking.  In addition, since it is composed primarily of medium-chain fatty acids, it is not like the long-chain saturated fatty acids that raise blood cholesterols levels.  And unlike almost all saturated and unsaturated oils, it does not promote the platelet stickiness that leads to blood clot formation.  Compared to other oils, coconut oil is rather benign.  Replacing the liquid vegetable oils you are now using with coconut oil can help eliminate the many health problems caused by consuming oxidized oils.

While coconut oil’s apparent harmlessness is a definite advantage, it is not the primary reason it is so good.  The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil give it properties that make it unique and considered by many health practitioners to be the healthiest oil on earth.

Saturated fats are the only fats that are safe to heat and cook with.  Unless the vegetable oil has been cold-pressed or expeller-pressed, it contains transfatty acids.  Transfatty acids have been linked to a variety of adverse health effects, including cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, diverticulitis, complications of diabetes and other degenerative conditions.

Research has shown that medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil can kill bacteria and viruses that cause influenza, herpes, bladder infections, and numerous other conditions.  Coconut oil is also great to use on the skin including skin rashes, eczema, psoriasis or even seriously burned or critically ill patients.  Many people report that coconut oil helps them control sugar cravings and reduces hypoglycemic symptoms.

When you eat coconut oil, the body uses it immediately to make energy rather than storing it as body fat.  Research has shown that replacing long-chain fatty acids with medium-chain fatty acids results in a decrease in body weight gain and a reduction in fat deposition.  Medium-chain fatty acids increase metabolic rate, making coconut oil a dietary fat that can actually promote more weight loss!

Polyunsaturated vegetable oils depress thyroid activity, thus lowering metabolic rate.  In contrast, coconut oil stimulates metabolism, increases energy and improves thyroid functions, all of which aid in reducing unwanted body fat.  The recommended dosage of coconut oil is three to four tablespoons per day.
